The James River
Young takes place on the James River in Virginia. The magic of the River is prevalent in this play. Lauren often finds solitude at this place even meeting a few friendly woodland creatures along the way.

A Brief History of the James
The James River is Virginia's largest river flowing across the entire state beginning in the Appalachian Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. Residents of the watershed rely on the river for drinking water, commerce, and recreation.

"The James is known as America's “founding river” because it was the site of the first permanent English colony at Jamestown in 1607, and home to Virginia's first colonial capital at Williamsburg. Indigenous people lived in Virginia for 16,000 years before colonists arrived."*
